Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, Member of Parliament for Solihull West and Shirley, met with representatives from the Nationwide Caterers Association (NCASS). The organisation helps independent food and drink businesses to operate safely, legally and profitably.
Recently, independent food and drink businesses have been enjoying the successes of festivals and other pop-up opportunities. However, with all businesses there are important regulations and steps that must be taken to ensure the business is fully compliant. NCASS exists to provide crucial help and navigation, but to also give advice to help businesses flourish.
Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst MP said:
This was a useful meeting to learn about the modern needs of the food and catering sector. In Solihull West and Shirley we enjoy a large and varied choice of places to eat and drink. There are also frequent festivals here or nearby.
It’s a tough industry to work in but this sector provides a lot of opportunities and creativity to entrepreneurs. I am concerned that figures have shown that fifty pubs a month shut in the first half of the year in England and Wales for 2024. With Labour not ruling out tax rises for businesses and with even more regulation, more closures are likely.
Now Labour is discussing “tightening up on some of the hours of operation” to help curb anti-social behaviour and to improve people’s health. This big Government intervention would force pubs to shut early, having devastating consequences on a pub's ability to make money, stay open and employ staff.
Pubs are not only a key part of the local economy, but are also key community assets, where neighbours, friends and family get together to have a drink and a chat.
In response to the Government’s attack on hospitality, in 2025 I will be launching my Independent Food and Drink Awards, recognising the hard and creative work of hospitality businesses across the constituency. Residents will be able to nominate their favourite independent establishments within the constituency.
