I am often asked what first motivated me to get involved in politics. For me the answer is simple. It is all about helping to create a stronger society and more cohesive communities. I want to turn to my son’s generation and say that we have not just maintained society, we have improved it.
It is because of this, the stories of violent disorder taking place across our country in recent weeks have been so unsettling.
I condemn the behaviour of the rioters in the strongest terms. It goes without saying that those responsible for such lawlessness must be held accountable, and I stand full square with the Government in making sure that justice is served.
It would be remiss not to mention our Police, who deserve special recognition for their exemplary service during these challenging times. I recently met with the local Chief Superintendent and Superintendent to personally express my gratitude for the hard work of Solihull Police. Their impeccable handling of the situation here in Solihull was commendable. The bravery and dedication they display, especially during moments of unrest, deserve our highest respect and appreciation.
Local businesses also played a crucial role in maintaining public safety. The decision to close Touchwood early was undoubtedly difficult. Nonetheless, businesses cooperated fully to put the safety of staff, employees, and visitors first.
Amidst the turmoil, we have also witnessed wonderful examples of community spirit and resilience. Here in the Solihull Borough, the community’s response has been heartwarming. Thankfully, the gatherings on Sunday 4th August passed without incident. Thereafter, our local residents came together with a shared purpose of unity. This is a testament to our community’s strength and solidarity.
Across the country, there have been similar accounts of acts of kindness. From repairing damaged buildings to organising community street clean-ups. People from all backgrounds have shown remarkable generosity and a commitment to helping one another. These efforts highlight the true British spirit of cooperation and compassion.
It is these individual acts of community spirit that are the glue that hold our society together. They serve to foster and grow our relationships; reminding us that there is more that unites us than divides us. These are the values we must uphold. The values we must keep close. The values we must pass on to the next generation.
Solihull West and Shirley is a vibrant and diverse community, home to people of a multiplicity of backgrounds and religions. We benefit from this confluence of cultures. Despite the recent challenges facing our country, the determination, togetherness, and compassion of our residents here in Solihull West and Shirley showcase the essence of community. These acts of unity and support, shining through adversity, offer hope and inspiration as we move forward together.
